Settling in for the long haul

Well, we've been home now for 11 days and are starting to find our rhythm. Mind you, I'm using the term rhythm not 'comfort zone' or 'center of being' or other flowery euphemisms. How does one get used to sleeping in 2-3 hour stints you might ask? YOU DON'T! There is an obvious pattern however. Sometimes after a late night feeding I'll lay awake for a moment dreading sleep, only because I know I'll have to be awake in another couple of hours. But I digress. This is but one of many rights of passage for parents. Getting to know our little guy has been such an awesome experience that I have no problem trading a few comforts.

Let me fill in some blanks. At the last entry a week ago, we were all pretty strung out and fragile. Wilder was having some problems nursing. He wasn't getting enough milk to clear his gut. This is a problem for babies because their livers aren't fully developed and leads towards infant jaundice. Consequently, Wilder became weaker and fed even less. We would have to wake him up to feed. See a downward spiral here? So, we had to supplement with formula. He's doing great now, but those first few days home from the hospital were a little tense. There was much rejoicing when a "hot-one" (i.e., poopy diaper) appeared last monday.

Currently, we still have to wake him for most feedings. I don't think this is related to health but more a combination of the Bourdaghs tendency to procrastinate and the Schmidt sleeping gene. We've even begun to see visitors. Here are the Sagors:

Best of all, Wilder is becoming more energetic and receptive. Here we're trying to get him to do his stepping reflex. I swear, if you put one of his feet down to the floor and then begin alternating feet, his legs will kick out reflexively in a walking pattern. He was doing it right before I turned on the camera. We aren't just messin' with him. Though, as parents we reserve the right to do so.

Anyway, there are more pics on the picasa site. Cheers from B3.
